With the advancement of technology and its integration in education, animation is playing a more important and impactful role in the teaching and learning experience. Using animation for teaching and learning provides several benefits for the student as well as the facilitator. According to Mayer (1996), animation helps to reduce the cognitive load on students. Rieber et al (1990) also illustrate that animation aids in students’ processing of information. More than the profound internal/cognitive benefits, incorporating animation in the teaching and learning process helps to develop communication, critical thinking and technological skills as well as creativity in both educator and student, and makes the overall experience more engaging. With a focus on PowToons, this workshop will provide you with a hands-on experience in creating animated PowerPoint presentations, and the ways in which animated PowerPoint presentations can be used for highly engaging and innovative teaching, learning, student interaction, projects and assessments.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  1. Create a plan/blueprint for an animated PowerPoint presentation
  2. Create engaging animated presentations using PowerPoint PowToons
  3. Design learning activities using PowToons
  4. Identify the benefits of animation in teaching and learning

Topics Include:
• Accurately Defining Animation
• The Benefits of Animations in Education
• What is PowToons?
• Creating Animated Presentations Using PowToons
• How can PowToons be used in course delivery?
