The UWI Faculty Café

As a way of addressing multiple pathways of faculty development, the UWISTA Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning introduces a new format of capacity-building. This Face-to-Face (F2F) unconference takes place once every semester with the aim of fostering a teaching and learning community.

This faculty-led event focuses on allowing faculty to share and reflect on the various instructional tools, strategies and or approaches used in the physical and online classroom.

Format of Event

In 20 minutes or less, presenters (faculty) will share in a small 5–6-person group (table), how they use instructional tools, strategies and or approaches in their classroom. Attendees will be able to choose a presentation of interest and have the opportunity to join other presentations throughout the event. A rotation of the group (attendees) will take place after each presentation.

Format of Presentation

  • Introduction - 5 mins
  • Demonstration/Simulation - 10 min
  • Reflection & Question & Answer - 5 mins

Presentation Topics

Tracking Attendance with MyElearning

  • A demonstration how to use the myElearning attendance module (both manual, QR codes), with some basic analytics.

The Weekly Spotlight Feature

  • The Weekly Spotlight Feature was created to increase student participation in formative assessments in courses. Research on students’ perception of the tool reveals supplementary benefits beyond its intended purpose. The presentation will include a rationale for the tool, guidelines on setting it up in courses, and as per research findings, benefits of using the tool in courses.

Building Capacity in Statistics Education through Reflection-on-Action

  • This work highlights the importance of fostering a culture of reflection among statistics educators, encouraging them to critically analyze their teaching practices and make data-informed decisions. These insights show the significance of collaboration, and peer and student feedback to build capacity, aligning with the diverse needs of students within higher education.

The BOPPPS Model: A Valuable Tool for Lesson Planning

  • The BOPPPS Model is a valuable tool that educators can utilize to plan their sessions. Beyond benefitting the educator, BOPPPS Lesson Plans are also important resources for students. An experience of utilizing this tool in 5 undergraduate courses in 2023 will be shared.

Special Feature: Open Educational Resources

  • During this iteration of the Faculty Cafe event, The UWI's ambassadors of OER development will showcase their OER courses.
