Designing Assessment Rubrics

Rubrics are organized grading schemes that can help you give better feedback in less time while also making grading criteria transparent for students. This workshop is designed for faculty and instructors who are responsible for assessment design. It will cover the principles of using rubrics to improve student learning, assessment efficiency, and grading consistency.

What you will learn:
• How to construct a rubric that aligns with learning outcomes and assessment criteria
• How to use rubrics to provide effective feedback to students
• How to create rubrics using different formats and tools
• How to implement rubrics in your teaching practice
• How to use generative AI to create rubrics

Workshop format:
The workshop will be divided into two parts. In the first part, we will explore the foundational elements of rubrics, including their components, types, and benefits. We will also discuss how to create rubrics using artificial intelligence and learning management systems. In the second part, participants will work in small groups to collaboratively create rubrics for specific assessment scenarios.

Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Identify the components of a rubric
• Distinguish between different types of rubrics and their appropriate uses
• Describe the benefits of using rubrics in assessment
• Create a rubric that aligns with learning outcomes and assessment criteria
• Explore several tools used to create rubrics
• Use AI to assist design of rubrics
