CETL1001: Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Educators in Higher Education (HE) are expected to not only be experts in their respective disciplines but also to be proficient in the art and science of teaching and learning. CETL1001 - Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education was developed to equip HE educators who may not have formal teacher training with foundational skills in teaching and learning. This online course introduces contemporary and best-practice methods for both face-to-face and online environments. While new or untrained educators can explore strategies for creating and facilitating effective learning experiences, experienced instructors have the opportunity to refine and enhance their teaching practice. Participants engage with this fully online course at their own pace, allowing them to interact with the content at times that suit their schedules.

A statement of completion and a course badge will be awarded to individuals who submit or participate in all assessment and activities required throughout the course.


Target Audience

  • New and experienced educators.
  • Individuals pursuing a career in teaching.
  • Human Resources professionals or trainers.

Note: This course is exclusively available to UWI St. Augustine staff with an email address ending in @sta.uwi.edu. Participants must ensure that they have access to their @sta.uwi.edu email throughout the duration of the course.

Each of the modules runs for 2 weeks.

  3. Assessment and Feedback
  4. Instructional Strategies
  5. The Reflective Practitioner

Goals

In this online course participants will be provided with opportunities to: 

  • Deepen knowledge of how students learn and instructional strategies.
  • Explore course design, frameworks and principles. 
  • Develop effective learning outcomes using Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • Explore effective assessment practice in higher education.
  • Reflect on the practice of the instructor as a facilitator of learning. 

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Design learning activities aligned to instructional objectives.  
  • Assess instruction aligned to objectives and activities.
  • Align assessment methods to learning outcomes.
  • Engage in reflective practice through journaling personal experiences /professional practice. 
  • Apply active learning strategies to achieve desired learning outcomes.
  • Critically evaluate personal performance.

It is recommended that participants complete ILO101 - Introduction to Learning Online before accessing CETL1001.

This is a flexible on-demand online (asynchronous) course available via myeLearning.

Fully Online Asynchronous

Programme Prerequisites 

Completion of The Introduction to Learning Online (ILO101) course is a prerequisite for the Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education course.

Online Learning Activities

This course is facilitated by the utilization of UWI's Learning Management System (LMS). Therefore, activities will include various capabilities of the LMS such as; discussion forums, quizzes, assignments (journaling), video, interactive content etc.

Assessments

The course is guided by the following assessment structure:
  • Module quizzes 40%
  • BOPPPS Lesson Plan 10%
  • Peer Observation 30% 
  • Teaching Philosophy 20%

Marking Scheme

Participants must score 80% in each quiz module to advance to the other module.
