Teaching with UDL: A Workshop for Higher Education Faculty

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as an approach to creating inclusive, engaging, and accessible learning experiences.
The session will begin with a reintroduction of the rationale, goals, and core principles of UDL and how they support learner variability and foster equitable access to learning. Through Interactive activities and collaborative discussion, participants will explore how the UDL framework can be combined with other pedagogical approaches to develop learning outcomes, assessments, and learning activities that provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression.
Whether new to UDL or looking to deepen your practice, this workshop will offer practical strategies and tools to enhance your teaching and support all learners.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the rationale, goals, and principles of the UDL framework to support learner access and engagement.
- Apply the UDL framework in combination with constructive alignment and backwards course design to develop clear and inclusive learning goals.
- Analyze how UDL principles inform the design of assessments that offer choice and flexibility for diverse learners.
- Design learning activities that provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression in a variety of teaching and learning contexts.
